Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau Named Tourism Trailblazer
Geocache Project Garners Award

[Fox Cities] – The Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau’s innovative approach to increasing traffic at the Fox Cities Visitor Center has received a Tourism Trailblazer award from the Wisconsin Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (WACVB).

Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Kelli Trumble joined WACVB in presenting the award to Lynn Peters, Bureau executive director during the WACVB’s 2007 Wisconsin Fall Tourism Convention in LaCrosse.

“As many people have turned to the Internet for travel planning, walk-in traffic at Visitor Centers has flattened or declined,” commented Peters. “Geocaching is a hot new trend in tourism, and we recognized that hiding a cache would increase traffic at the Visitor Center.”

Geocaching is an adventure game in which for GPS users look for hidden items with only the aid of GPS coordinates. Caches are located all over the world and coordinates are shared on the Internet. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. “It’s always an honor to be recognized by your peers,” said Jay Schumerth, chair of the Bureau’s Board of Directors. “The geocache project has been a fun and educational endeavor for us.”

WACVB presents the Wisconsin Tourism Trailblazers awards each year in an effort to increase the visibility of Wisconsin’s tourism industry and destination marketing organizations. In 2006, the Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau was named a Trailblazer for its “Wisconsin’s Shopping Place” branding effort.

WACVB represents Wisconsin's top destination marketing organizations and initiates cooperative ventures that enhance the state's tourism industry.

Total tourism expenditures in the Fox Cities were more than $383 million, and tourism created 6,467 jobs and $110.65 million of resident income in 2006.
